Suppose you’ve recently relapsed and found that the stress of being in environments around alcohol and drugs or a lack of structure is particularly triggering. To join a sober living house, residents must pay their own rent, which could range anywhere from $500 to $5,000 per month, depending on the location and whether certain houses include meals and other services. Residents may not have to pay for utilities at all, making housing very affordable. Residents may remain in a sober living home for as long as they want – if they continue following the house rules.

Sober House Availability

Most importantly, residents must stay clean and sober while the live in the home. Living in a sober house can support sobriety and help alcoholics and recovering addicts adjust to new freedoms after a treatment program without the temptations of an unhealthy environment. Many men and women will live in a sober house for three to six months, even up to a year, while they build the skills and character to confidently live independently.

How Do You Find a Sober-Living Home?

Different areas use different terminology, but all three describe a sober living environment where residents can expect to share a home with like minded individuals in recovery, free from drugs and alcohol. Massachusetts uses the terms “sober house” to refer to sober living homes, where “recovery residence” refers to what many would call a “half-way house”. Some people relapse after treatment because they are unable to cope with life in an unsupportive environment. Sober living homes are alcohol and drug-free living environments that provide structured, transitional housing for men and women in recovery. Sober living houses are “alcohol- and drug-free living environments for individuals attempting to maintain abstinence from alcohol and drugs”. They are typically structured around 12-step programs or other recovery methodologies.
